Santorini

We are about to leave beautiful Santorini tomorrow for a 7 hour boat ride to Athens. This island is very different from the rest, a volcano that caved in on itself and you spend your time traveling around the steep remnant of a rim of a volcano. Steep cliffs on one side, slanted and beatuiful country on the other with wonderful black sand beaches. Yesterday we rented a quad (no dangerous scooters for us) and toured the island, up and down. The sunset is beautiful, but you pay for it in Euros which hurts. Everything is expensive, cocktails cost more than food does. But alas, we are traveling and are obligated to have a good time and not worry too much. So far so good, financially. :) The ferry over here from Naxos was free due to a mechanical problem the ferry had, we had to take a different one (smaller boat), so got our money refunded but still got to our destination on time. Amazing!

Things I have learned on the greek islands:
  • 'Aftharista' is 'thank you', the most complicated way to say thanks i've ever heard
  • When you are on an island, you can't shop around much for a good price
  • Black sand is VERY hot
  • Euros are not meant to be spend like dollars. It's easy to get lulled into 'oh, it's only 7 euros'...
  • The rules of the road are similar to a food chain: biggest to smallest. If you are walking, watch your butt
  • Wine sold in large plastic bottles may not taste good but it saves money on drinks while watching the sunset
  • I am fiercely allergic to donkeys as well as horses (we found this out as we walked 588 steps down to the old port, passing but not touching about 40 donkeys, and i had horrible allergies)
  • Paul sleeps a lot, especially after any dramamine, but functions much better after a nap. The only problem is to find something to do during the hours he is sleeping.
  • Greece is beautiful!!! White paint must sell like crazy here...

No pics for now, I didn' bring my camera cord, but will post soon. Have to go! Ciao!
